Cracked Walls

Many newer homes have basements with poured concrete walls rather than concrete blocks. Cracks in poured concrete require special repair methods.

The Basement Guys® have developed and use their own carbon fiber crack repair products for an affordable basement / foundation wall repair solution.


Bowed Basement Walls

Bowed Walls are caused by soil load and under designed foundations. Outside pressure is directed towards the middle of the foundation wall. In order to correct this the wall needs added support so the outside pressure is dispersed throughout the entire wall.

Systems such as Wall Tie Backs, Beams (Stationary / Power) and Dig & Push do not straighten the bowed walls and will ultimately break and crush the concrete block. Carbon fiber systems such as Sheets, Plates & Kevlar Weaves* do not secure to the sill plate or floor where the major problem areas occur. Due to the lack of support the outside ground pressure shifts to the top and bottom of the foundation wall. This force ultimately causes damage resulting in more repair work needed.

*Kevlar Weave system does secure to the sill plate, but movement still occurs resulting in damage. This system does NOT secure to the floor.

Foundation Bowed Walls

The carbon fiber is fastened to the sill plate with a galvanized bracket and secured to the foundation floor with a carbon fiber pin.     Foundation Construction

    In order for you to understand what causes a water problem in your basement, it is important to understand how the foundation was originally built and waterproofed.

    1. First a hole was dug
    2. Then a footing was poured
    3. The walls were built on the footing
    4. The floor is poured between the walls
    5. Drainage tile and gravel are placed at the bottom of the hole next to the footing
    6. The walls are sealed
    7. Finally, the hole is back-filled with the soil that was dug from the hole.

    Bowl Effect

    The soil in the clay backfilled area is now "loose" disturbed soil, compared to the "dense" undisturbed soil around it. This difference in soil created the "BOWL EFFECT".

    Clay Backfill will swell as it becomes saturated with water which created PRESSURE directed towards the foundation wall.

    Loose Soil + Dense Soil + Saturation = BOWED WALLS

    There are four (4) solutions to fixing bowed walls...

    • Beams (Stationary & Power)

    • Carbon Fiber (Plates, Sheets & Weaves)

    Each solution has several disadvantages when attempting to fix your foundation wall.

  • Wall Tie Backs

    Wall Tie Backs

    Wall tie back companies usually state their product will straighten walls over time, but never put this in writing.

    The facts are that concrete blocks will break and crush before walls push dirt out of the way.

    Disadvantages include:

    • Expensive ($$$)
    • Bowed walls not straightened as stated
    • Damaged concrete blocks
    • Exterior excavation is necessary
    • Aesthetics could be a concern for potential buyers
  • Stationary Beams

    Stationary Beams

    Stationary beams keep the wall in current position and does not allow any further bowing. The problem in this does not fix the problem.

    FHA standards state stationary beams cannot be less than a 13# H-Beam.

    In order to get beams to maximum strength, beams gave to flex 3%. For example a beam would have to flex 1/2 inch on an 8 foot beam.

    Disadvantages include:

    • Expensive ($$$)
    • Obtrusive beams sticking out from wall
    • Cracks in wall not fixed
    • Decreases property value
  • Power Beams

    Power Beams

    Similar to a stationary beam, power beams do not sit in the floor, but are bolted to the floor. The problem with this method is the bolts rust and break. The top of the power beam has a bracket that can be tightened which pushes the wall back over time.

    Once again, no company puts this in writing because the concrete blocks will break and crush before walls push dirt out of the way.

    Disadvantages include:

    • Expensive ($$$)
    • Obtrusive beams sticking out from wall
    • Cracks in wall not fixed
    • Beams not secured to floor
    • Increased pressure twist floor joists
    • Decreases property value
  • Dig & Push

    Dig & Push

    Dig & Push requires digging around the outside perimeter of the house in order to push (straighten) the bowed foundation wall. Carbon fiber or beams are then used to support the wall.

    This process is not only costly, but is very obtrusive and depending on the location can be difficult or even impossible to do.

    Disadvantages include:

    • Expensive ($$$)
    • Obtrusive
    • Difficult installation process
    • Destructive to sidewalks, driveways, flowerbeds and yards
  • Carbon Fiber Solutions

    Carbon Fiber Solutions

    Carbon Fiber is the strongest wall repair system on the market.

    Advantages include:

    • No deterioration
    • No rotting
    • No movement
    • Minimal intrusiveness
    • Fast, clean installation

  • Carbon Fiber Sheets

    Carbon Fiber Sheets

    Carbon fiber sheets are similar to plates in which they do not secure to the sill plate or floor where the major problem areas occur.

    Due to the lack of support the outside ground pressure shifts to the top and bottom of the foundation wall. The force ultimately causes damage resulting in more repair work needed.

    Disadvantages include:

    • No connection to sill plate or floor
    • Damage continues at the top and bottom of wall
    • No horizontal strength
    • Messy installation
  • Carbon Fiber Plates

    Carbon Fiber Plates

    Carbon fiber plates are pre-pregnated with an epoxy resin. The plates do not secure to the sill plate or floor where the major problem areas occur.

    Due to the lack of support the outside ground pressure shifts to the top and bottom of the foundation wall. The force ultimately causes damage resulting in more repair work needed.

    Disadvantages include:

    • No connection to sill plate or floor
    • Damage continues at the top and bottom of wall
    • No horizontal strength
    • No visible signs that plates are sealed to wall
    • Epoxy difficult to apply
  • Carbon Fiber Kevlar Weave

    Carbon Fiber Kevlar Weave

    This carbon fiber product has a Kevlar weave that produces some horizontal strength.

    A necktie is attached to the sill plate, which disperses the outside force more evenly, but still allows for continued movement, which can lead to damage. Also, due to no connection to the foundation floor the carbon fiber weave solution does not ultimately fix the bowed wall.

    Disadvantages include:

    • Movement at necktie attachment
    • Minimal horizontal strength
    • No connection to floor
    • Damage continues at the top and bottom of wall

Shifting / Settling Foundations

The Basement Guys® use the best foundation pier alternative on the market. Our system was designed to be the strongest foundation pier in the industry by combining galvanized steel and high strength concrete. Each pier is installed centrally beneath the footing rather than outside of the footing, thus transferring the structural load directly on top of the foundation pier. Our foundation pier system will achieve the greatest depth possible while installed in a position to provide the greatest support.

Shifting / Settling Foundations

Our interlocking, patent pending foundation pier segments are comprised of high-strength concrete that is pre-cast in a steel sleeve which resists corrosion, providing superior shear strength and compressive resistance as proven by independent testing labs. The outer casing is filled with a concrete core, and cured for maximum hardness. The foundation pier segments are hydraulically driven into the ground one at a time. After one foundation pier segment is driven, another segment is connected to the foundation pier, and the process is repeated until the foundation pier hits bedrock or a dense strata of sub- surface material. The foundation pier is then topped with a galvanized steel cap, and finally the house is lifted and secured to the foundation pier.

Tensile Testing - Corner Wall Repair

DESCRIPTION

Two sets of composite samples were received for tensile testing in accordance with ACI 440.3R-04.

MECHANICAL

All samples were conditioned for a minimum of 40 hours at 20 ± 3°C and 50 ± 5% relative humidity. All samples were tested in similar conditions. Five samples were received for tensile testing in accordance with ACI 440.3R- 04 which in turn referred to ASTM D3039. The samples were tested in the as-received condition. After recieving the samples, it was noted that the specimens had uneven and jagged gage sections. Some of the samples showed signs of voids within the weave of the material. The samples were tested on a servo-hydraulic test stand at a crosshead speed of 0.05 millimeters per second.

The sample results are presented in Table 01.
