Fever

Nothing concerns a parent faster than a child with a fever. Because it’s often the first sign of illness, most parents realize that fever is the best indicator of an underlying infection or virus. But along with it being a good indicator of illness, the age-old question for many is “do you treat a fever, or not?”

Its key to remember that a fever is a normal part of most illness process and isn’t always a bad thing. In fact, its commonly the body’s way of working on the infection or virus.

But, there are times when a fever CAN BE a dangerous symptom. Here’s when you should be concerned and seek further medical care.

Typically, it depends on the age of the patient and any associated symptoms:

3-6 mo. Under 102 Rest and fluids unless the child is weak and
Excessively sleepy, irritable or uncomfortable
Over 102 Seek medical attention
6-24 mo. Over 102 Consider giving Acetaminophen (Tylenol) or
Ibuprofen (Advil) proper dosing for age/Weight. Never give aspirin.
Over 2 Under 102 Rest and fluids unless the child seems
Excessively weak, irritable or sleepy
Over 102 Provide Acetaminophen or Ibuprofen.
Seek medical attention if symptoms persist
Or fever does not respond to medication
Adults over 18 Over 102 Treat with Acetaminophen or Ibuprofen.
Seek medical attention if symptoms persist
Or accompanied by stiff neck, severe headache,
Shortness of breath, or any other unusual symptoms
